Death by alcohol is a real thing. And a brush with this fact of life completely turned things around for our featured guest in this episode. She asserts, “The worst thing that ever happened to me was drinking alcohol.”

In this 7th installment of our podcast, One Year No Beer Co-Founder Ruari Fairbairns talks to Lucy Rocca. Lucy is the founder of the phenomenon that is the Soberistas, a movement which has built an incredibly supportive, non-judgemental community helping many people conquer long-term alcohol dependencies. She has written five best-selling books and regularly inspires people to take up alcohol free living.

The ‘magic potion’

Listen as Lucy recounts how she started drinking at the young age of 13. She had thought, accordingly, that alcohol was like a magic potion that made her feel attractive, made her ‘fit in’, and made things seem so much more fun. She was so seduced she embraced a hedonistic lifestyle basking in alcohol throughout her twenties. She confesses, “I wasn’t ever drinking for the taste, or to get a little bit tipsy. I was drinking to get drunk.”

Lucy was divorced and a single parent in her late twenties. Alcohol became a ‘self-medication’ for her. And she relates, in this episode, how she carried on with the routine of frequenting bars, muddling through the week and living for the weekend, until she was 35.

Wake up call

It was that fateful night in April 2011 when Lucy’s life was changed forever. She remembers how she was drinking alone, being very depressed, and downing 3 bottles of wine and a litter of strong cider. She eventually collapsed on a pavement outside of her house, and woke up in a hospital. She thought she could’ve died, and she never drank alcohol again after that.

Soberistas

Drawing from her own experiences as a heavy drinker (for twenty years) who did not find any support in quitting drinking, Lucy created Soberistas. She discusses in this podcast how she saw the need for an ‘online space where people could be completely anonymous and honest about their drinking.’ The movement started with a blog. And it was such a sensation it initially attracted at least 20,000 people to sign up. It has been featured in Australian Vogue, Canadian Elle, Red Magazine, and several popular TV programs.

Beautiful redemption

Lucy muses, in retrospect, how she became fitter, healthier, more productive and creative, a better mom, a nicer friend, and how she now has more money, being alcohol free:

“I feel the best I ever felt (and I’m nearly 41) and I look the best I ever looked . . . The single act of stopping drinking has completely changed my life.”

In this episode, One Year No Beer Co-Founder Andy Ramage interviews Jeff Sanders. Jeff is the author of the #1 Amazon best-selling book on productivity, The 5 AM Miracle: Dominate Your Day Before Breakfast. He is also a keynote speaker, a productivity coach, creator of the 47 Strategies Productivity Self-Assessment, and host of The 5 AM Miracle Podcast.

Change your life before breakfast

Jeff admits in this interview that he was a ‘night owl.’ It took him a long time to realize that the setup wasn’t working for him. The epiphany came five years ago when he needed to train for a marathon, while working a full-time job and doing a side business. He thought that something had to give, at first. Eventually, it turned out that he actually had time to do all of those things!

All it took was for him to wake up at 5am each day, do a morning run for his marathon preparation, and suddenly, he was able to do it all. Well, not all, but he realized it was possible for him to do a lot of the things that he needed to do, and more. He continued this setup of waking up early to prepare business projects and other personal goals. It worked so well for him he wrote an ebook about it, started a blog, launched a podcast, and wrote a best-selling book.

The alcohol free effect

Listen as Jeff talks about his recent drinking habits, and taking on the One Year No Beer challenge. He professes, “You don’t realize how much of a role alcohol plays in your life until you remove it.”

Incredibly, being the paragon of productivity that he already is, he asserts he still has seen a big boost in his own ability to get work done every day, when he took the 90 day alcohol free challenge. Accordingly, not drinking makes waking up early so much easier. He suggests, “There’s so much power in being alcohol free and it truly helps your productivity.”

‘What to drink when you’re not drinking’

Ben has had a lengthy and successful career in branding, having worked in some of the world’s biggest drinks companies and luxury brands. Being the natural visionary that he is, he then set his sights on creating an innovation that could bring everything he loved and has known about into one place that could have a real reason to exist in people’s lives. And he was hell-bent on solving the dilemma of ‘what to drink when you’re not drinking.’ Enter Seedlip.

Listen as Ben talks about how his 300-year-old farming heritage, love for food and cooking, a book written in the 18th century called The Art of Distillation, and his extensive experience in branding came all together to create the world’s first non-alcoholic spirit.

It’s all in your mind

When we decide to start our journey to become alcohol free, one of the realities that we always have to face and overcome is societal pressure. Among other things, we have this fear of being singled out for not drinking. What we must also realize is that so much of drinking is psychology – routines and behavior we’ve been conditioned into believing. With this in mind, Seedlip offers a no-compromise solution. Ben expertly captures this in this interview:

“If you walk up to the bar and (someone else) orders a gin and tonic and (another) orders a whisky and coke, then I can order a Seedlip and tonic, and the bartender’s gonna do exactly the same thing in front of all of us . . . we all get the same experience, we all feel ‘part-of.’“

An adult drink with adult flavors

Ben also relates here in detail how Seedlip is made. He explains how each raw, natural ingredient is steeped at extended periods of time and carefully distilled to get the best flavor and highest quality aromas. This is not your ordinary fruit juice or ‘sugary, fizzy drinks.’

Currently, Seedlip has two varieties on offer: Seedlip Spice 94, an aromatic and complex blend of individual copper-pot distillates including Oak, Allspice Berries and Grapefruit peel; and Seedlip Garden 108, a green and floral blend of individual copper-pot distillates including handpicked peas and hay, and traditional herbs including spearmint, rosemary and thyme.

Seedlip is available in some of UK’s finest Michelin Star restaurants, hotels and retailers including The Ledbury, The Savoy and Selfridges. Accordingly, they’ll be launching their third product this year. And they’re planning to expand and conquer the world – well bars, restaurants, hotels and retailers mostly – starting with some key cities in the US and Western Europe soon.

Ben quips, “If you can go to a bar and choose between 10 amazing alcoholic cocktails, and 10 amazing non-alcoholic cocktails, that’s a fantastic state to play for the world to be in, is that choice.”

Imagine that you have committed most of your life to playing rugby. You have started young – at the tender age of four – and have later on developed a successful and distinguished rugby career spanning more than a decade, leading your country to international tournament victories and being voted ‘Best Seven’s Player of the World.’ You’re still in your prime, but you suddenly suffer a severe calf injury, effectively ending your illustrious rugby career. What would you do?

Well, this actually happened to an exceptional man, and in response, he did what felt natural – he sailed around the world, led an expedition on a 100 mile trek to the North Pole setting a Guinness World Record, climbed mountains, did other stunning challenges and helped raise more than £1 million for charity.

In this episode, OneYearNoBeer Co-Founder Ruari Fairbairns talks to the extraordinary Ollie Phillips. Phillips was a foremost rugby union footballer who played for the Newcastle Falcons, Stade Francais and England Sevens. He was voted 2009 World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year, but because of an injury (alluded to earlier), he was forced into early retirement in 2013. He is a Guinness World Record Holder, a motivational speaker, an expedition leader, an adventurer, an executive coach and is currently a highly successful businessman working in PwC as Digital Transformation Director.
